Interview with Joy Goktepe

While pursuing a business degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, Joy Goktepe co-authored 101 Inspirational Sayings and Stories, based on the life and experiences of her beloved grandmother. Today, Ms. Goktepe discusses her book and her interests.

Q. What made you decide to write 101 Inspirational Sayings and Stories?

A. I was inspired by the life and experiences of my beloved grandmother and aunt. I remember hearing the stories told by my grandmother all throughout my youth. My aunt was a teacher, a church organist and much more. So many of my grandmother’s and aunt’s ideas had a unique, positive, and memorable quality, I knew someone should document and share them.

Q. It sounds like family plays a major role in your life.

A. Yes, absolutely. I deeply appreciate the powerful influence my family had on my development. Through their support, I feel I can accomplish nearly anything. A good example is, of course, my grandmother, who hand-made several quilts for each of her eight children as an expression of caring and appreciation. I find her hard work, resulting in such beautiful heirlooms, very moving and inspirational.

Q. What are some of your other pursuits?

A. I like to stay active, so I am involved in a number of sports such as horseback riding, swimming, and soccer.
